Philip became interested in income tax preparation in the fall of 1988. At the time he was working as a courier driver and wanted to know what records to keep for tax purposes. Philip saw an advertisement for tax courses being offered by H&R Block so he signed up for the course. He worked with H&R Block during the 1989 tax season and started offering tax preparation as a service in 1990. He also volunteered as a community volunteer income tax preparer with the CRA CVITP during the 2005, 2006 and 2007 tax seasons.
Starting with the 2004 tax season, Philip worked with Elliott Gaum as a subcontractor, preparing his clients' tax returns via computer. In 2006, Philip signed up Elliott and himself for electronic filing tax returns. Philip continued working with Elliott till January, 2015 when he passes away. During those 11 years, learned to do corporate tax returns for Elliott's clients. Although he has over 11 years of corporate tax preparation experience, Philip didn't take any courses for it. Because of this, he is not confident doing corporate returns.
